Diary Entry – April 24, 1956

What a whirlwind of a day! I barely had a moment to sit down, but I suppose that's to be expected.

The morning started early as always—Tom left for work before sunrise, and I packed him a thermos of coffee and a sandwich for lunch. After he was out the door, I got the children ready for school. Johnny misplaced his shoes again, and we nearly missed the bus! I don’t know how that boy manages to lose things so easily.

Once the house was quiet, I did some tidying up. The lemon chiffon cake I made yesterday looked lovely sitting on the counter. Around 10:00, I headed to the Ladies' Auxiliary meeting at the church. It was a good turnout—Mrs. Patterson gave a talk on the upcoming charity drive, and we all agreed to help bake for the fundraiser. The cake was a hit, too. Mrs. Thompson even asked for the recipe, though I’m still not sure it turned out as good as usual.

After the meeting, I stopped by the grocer’s. They had fresh strawberries on sale, so I couldn’t resist picking some up. Maybe I’ll make shortcake this weekend. Tom loves that.

When I got home, I had just enough time to start dinner before the children returned from school. Johnny was full of energy, telling me all about how he caught a toad at recess. Sally, on the other hand, was quieter than usual. I think something may be bothering her, but when I asked, she just shrugged and went off to do her homework. I’ll keep an eye on her.

Supper was simple tonight—pork chops and scalloped potatoes. Tom looked tired again, but we had a nice chat after dinner. He mentioned something about new machinery at the plant and how it’s causing more problems than it’s fixing. I can tell it’s weighing on him, but he doesn’t say much.

Now, the children are in bed, and I’ve finally had a moment to sit with a cup of tea. The house feels so peaceful at this hour. I’ve been thinking more about our trip to the lake, and I think I’ll start making plans tomorrow. It’s always such a nice escape.

For now, though, it’s time for bed. Another busy day awaits.

Diary Entry – April 23, 1956

Today was another busy day. The weather was finally warming up, and the spring air felt wonderful as I hung the laundry on the line. It was such a bright, sunny morning, I couldn’t help but hum while going about the chores.

After breakfast, I caught the 11:30 bus downtown to do some shopping. Woolworth’s had a sale on linens, so I picked up a few things for the house. I ran into Mrs. Johnson at the store—we chatted for a bit about the children and how quickly they seem to be growing. Her youngest, Bobby, is starting school in the fall. Time flies.

Once I got home, I spent the afternoon baking a lemon chiffon cake for tomorrow’s Ladies' Auxiliary meeting. It turned out just fine, though I think I might have added a bit too much sugar. Still, I’m sure no one will notice.

Tom didn’t get home from work until after 6:00, so I had supper ready for him when he walked through the door—meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans. He seemed a little tired tonight, but he didn’t say much about his day. Sometimes I wonder if he’s been working too hard at the plant. We sat in the living room after dinner and listened to the radio for a while, then I started knitting a new pair of socks for him before bed.

Now the house is quiet. The children are fast asleep, and the only sound is the ticking of the clock on the mantle. I’ve been thinking a lot about our summer plans. Perhaps we’ll take a trip to the lake again, like we did last year. It would be nice to get away for a little while.

I should go to bed now, too. Tomorrow’s another busy day, and I have to be up early to get the children off to school.

Until tomorrow, Margaret
